Devil's claw is a sprawling groundcover native to South Africa that is related to sesame. The roots and secondary tubers of the plant are used to prepare tea, extracts and topical ointments.

Devil’s claw is a creeping, weedy perennial native to South Africa, specifically to the Kalahari Desert and Namibian steppes. Also known as harpago, grapple plant and duiwelsklou.  While it has been used in Africa for centuries, it is now found in modern health food stores and used by Westerners.

The plant has bright purple flowers and green leaves. The tuber is a woody fruit that is harvested in the fall.
