Ashwagandha has a documented history of use in India that spans more than 5,000 years. The herb is particularly significant in Ayurveda, India’s ancient system of healing. The key role of Ashwagandha is that of an adaptogen, meaning that it helps the various body systems to regain balance after undergoing a period of stress or trauma.

Origin: India

Active Compounds: Alkaloids (isopelletierine, anaferine, cuseohygrine, anahygrine), steroidal lactones (withanolides, withaferins), sterols (acyl steryl glucosides), saponins (sitoindosides).

Storage Tips: Store at room temperature in a tightly-sealed container away from direct sunlight.

Appearance and Aroma: Creamy beige or tan in color with a pungent, earthy aroma.

Cosmetic Uses: Use strong water infusions of Ashwagandha root to make skin toner and cleansers. Infuse in oil for topical salves, lotions and other skin care products.

Culinary Uses: Ashwagandha has a strong, distinct aroma and taste that isn’t particularly palatable alone. Use with other adaptogen herbs in tonics and teas.

Safety: Ashwagandha root is safe for most people but upset stomach and diarrhea have been reported. This herb should not be used during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before using Ashwagandha root if you have a history of a thyroid disorder or a hormone-sensitive condition, such as prostate cancer. This herb may interfere with certain medications, including benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants and barbiturates.
