How to tell if your Chakras are out of balance and what you can do about it

What are our Chakras?

The word Chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning spinning wheel of light. Chakras are a series of vortices of energy which exist above and below the surface of your body and within your body. Your “inner” chakras are associated with various glands, the one “below” to Mother Earth for grounding and the one “above” to our loving Source energy.

When your subtle energy system is balanced, you have a feeling of well-being, peacefulness and content. And your body will have a higher vibration, aligned to cosmic forces.

The ability of each chakra to function to its best relies on the health of all  your other chakras - each one is affected by the health and energy of the other.

What is the Root Chakra and what does it do?

The red Root Chakra is located at the base of your spine. The ancient Sanskrit word for this chakra is “Muladhara” meaning “root support”.

Your Root Chakra is related to survival of your body and identity as an individual. Yur health, constitution and security including material wealth are also linked to this chakra.

How to tell if your Root Chakra is balanced

Your Root Chakra is about being physically there and feeling content and comfortable. If it is open, you feel grounded, stable and secure. You don’t unnecessarily distrust people. You feel present in the here and now and connected to your physical body. You feel you have sufficient territory.

If you tend to be fearful or nervous, your Root Chakra is probably underactive. You easily feel unwelcome or excluded. If this chakra is overactive, you may be very materialistic and greedy. You could be obsessed with being secure and resist change. Related physical disorders include lower back pain, sciatica, varicose veins, rectal tumors, depression and immune related disorders.

What is the Spleen Chakra and what does it do

The orange Sacral (Spleen) Chakra s located just below the navel in the lower belly. This is the second chakra and is also called the Splenic or Spleen Chakra. The ancient Sanskrit word for this chakra is “ Svadhisthana” meaning “sacred home of the self”.

Your Sacral Chakra holds the energy of creativity, procreation, sex, morality, and control. Your dreams fantasies and emotions are also governed by this chakra. This chakra is associated with emotions, feelings, states of desire and imagination.

You get your sense of freedom and being open to change through your Sacral Chakra. It allows flexibility and flow in your life.

How to tell if your Sacral Chakra is balanced

Your Sacral Chakra is about feeling and sexuality. When it’s open, your feelings come freely and you’re able to express them without being over-emotional. You are open to intimacy and you can be passionate and lively. You have no problems dealing with your sexuality. If you tend to be stiff and unemotional or have a “poker face”, your Sacral Chakra is underactive and you’re not very open to people.

If this chakra is overactive, you tend to be emotional all the time. You’ll feel emotionally attached to people and you can be very sexual.

What is the Solar Plexus Chakra and what does it do

The yellow Solar Plexus (Navel) Chakra is located between your navel and the bottom of your rib cage. It is your third chakra and is also known as the Solar Plexus Chakra. The Sanskrit word for this chakra is “ Manipura” meaning “ city of shining jewels”.

This is where your strongest sense of self is stored. Here is where all your personal boundaries are set. It is the chakra of self-esteem and willpower. Your personal growth and change stem from the Navel Chakra. It is the key to transformation.

How to tell if your Navel Chakra is balanced

Your Navel Chakra is also about asserting yourself with others and in a group. When it is open, you feel in control and you have sufficient self-esteem. When your Solar PLexus Chakra is underactive, you tend to be passive and indecisive. You’re probably timid and don’t get what you want. If this chakra is overactive, you are domineering and probably even aggressive.

Dysfunction of this chakra usually manifests as difficulty obtaining or maintaining your own "personal power". This intuitive chakra is where we get our "gut instincts" that signal us to do or not to do something. Strong self-esteem which is a result of a healthy Solar Plexus Chakra is a requirement for developing our intuitive skills through our Third Eye Brow Chakra.

What is the Heart Chakra and what does it do

The green Heart Chakra is located in the center of your chest. The Sanskrit word for the fourth chakra is “ Anahata” meaning “unhurt, unstruck or unbeaten ”.

Your Heart Chakra has subtle harmonies that can be likened to plucking or striking a musical instrument. It lies at the center of your subtle body and is linked to both physical and spiritual aspects. It can take energy from the upper chakras and transform it to be absorbed by the lower chakras. In turn it can take the lower chakra energies and transform them into energy that forms your ideas, dreams, and thoughts.

You use this chakra center to touch others with love and compassion. Opening of your Heart Chakra enables you to give and receive the gift of love and compassion.

How to tell if your Heart Chakra is balanced

Your Heart Chakra is about love, kindness and affection. When it is open, you are compassionate and friendly, and you work at harmonious relationships. When it is underactive, you are cold and distant. If the Heart Chakra is overactive, you are suffocating people with your love and your love probably has quite selfish reasons.

What is the Throat Chakra and what does it do

The blue Throat Chakra is your communication center. Its Sanskrit name is “ Vishuddhi” meaning “ the pure place”.

Your fifth Throat Chakra is located in the center of the throat near your Adam's apple. This chakra is linked to our creativity and ability to communicate. The Throat Chakra oversees your ability to make responsible decisions and speak up for yourself. It is also your spiritual voice and helps you convey the truth from your heart and ideas from your mind.

How to tell if your Throat Chakra is balanced

Your Throat Chakra helps you to communicate our thoughts and feelings. It is directly connected to the ability to express inner creativity. Both teaching and learning are affected by the balance of the Throat Chakra. Some signs that it is out of balance are having difficulty expressing yourself, poor learning ability, habitual lying, fear, doubt and uncertainty.

Your Throat Chakra is also about self-expression and talking. When it is open, you have no problems expressing yourself, and you might even be doing so as an artist. When this chakra is underactive, you tend not to speak much and are probably introverted and shy. Not speaking the truth may block this chakra. If the Throat Chakra is overactive, you tend to speak too much, usually to domineer and keep people at a distance. You might also be a bad listener if this is the case.

What is the Third Eye Brow Chakra and what does it do

The indigo Third Eye Chakra (or Brow Chakra) is your sixth chakra. The Sanskrit word for this chakra is “ Ajna” meaning "command" or " summoning".

Your Third Eye (Brow) Chakra is located at the center of your forehead just above your eyebrows. Your inner wisdom is housed here. The Brow Chakra governs both your conscious and subconscious mind and allows you to see beyond your physical existence.

Identified by Yoga as "the seat of the Soul", the Third Eye Chakra energy center is associated with spiritual truth. Anytime you have unresolved issues of what is true on an absolute or philosophic level, your Brow Chakra may become stressed which can lead to pain, abnormalities of hearing, vision and/or psychic phenomena.

As the center of psychic knowledge, this chakra produces our dreams and fantasies, as well as advanced psychic states such as clairvoyance, telepathy, clairaudience and channelling and communicating with spirit guides. These are simply normal functions of this powerful chakra but anyone unaccustomed to them may find them shocking or a bit frightening at first. As such, the Brow Chakra is often the source of psychological as well as psychic-phenomena upheavals.

How to tell if your Third Eye Chakra is balanced

Your Third Eye Chakra is about insight and visualization. When it is open and balanced, you see everything clearly and have a good sense of intuition. You’re able to focus and make good and neutral decisions and not be attached to any particular outcome. You may tend to fantasize but that’s a good thing. It’s part of the creative and manifesting process. You have a rich spiritual life and can make the distinction between reality and your imagination or dreams.

If it is underactive, you’re not very good at thinking for yourself and you may tend to rely on authorities, doubting your own wisdom. You may be rigid in your thinking, relying on beliefs too much. You might even get confused easily.

If your Brow Chakra is overactive, you may live in a world of fantasy too much and lose touch with reality. You could be overly distressed or fearful about your mind’s eye visions. This could also be the result of your Third Eye Chakra opening without your lower chakras being properly balanced and strong enough to support this. You have difficulty making decisions that should be quite simple. You feel scattered and unable to focus and have clouded judgment.

What is the Crown Chakra and what does it do

The violet Crown Chakra is the seventh chakra. In the language of Sanskrit it is known as the “ Sahasrara” meaning “ Lotus of the Thousand Petals”.

Your Crown Chakra is considered to be the door to divine universal loving energy. It takes you far beyond physical worldly things into timeless infinite consciousness. It is the pathway to your higher consciousness.

Identified by Yoga as the Crown Chakra or Thousand Petaled Lotus Chakra, this energy center encompasses the crown of your head, upper brain mass and the ductless glands located within the brain. Associated with "Macroprospectus" in Kaballah and “Cosmic Consciousness” in western mystical traditions, the Seventh Chakra houses that portion of the Self which endures unchanged through time. While the Soul (centered in the Third Eye or Brow Chakra just below the Crown Chakra) evolves from Life to Life (or Phase to Phase in our development), the Crown Chakra could be viewed as your "eternal potential" and "lasting identity."

How to tell if your Crown Chakra is balanced

Your Crown Chakra is your body's primary co-ordination center. It connects you to Universal sources of energy and with the world as a whole. A balanced Crown Chakra allows for expanded awareness on an emotional and spiritual level. You’re able to live and be happy in the present moment – in a mindful manner and knowing that you can always rely on your inner guidance.

The Crown Chakra is also about wisdom, knowing your Self and being one with the world. When this chakra is open, you are unprejudiced and quite aware of the world and yourself. If it is underactive, you’re not very aware of spirituality. You’re probably quite rigid in your thinking. If this chakra is overactive, you are probably intellectualizing things too much. You may be addicted to spirituality and possibly ignoring your bodily needs.

Some other signs that your Crown Chakra is out of balance are co-ordination difficulties, poor balance and clumsiness, fear of alienation, attempts to stop new thoughts (in yourself as well as others), lack of spiritual exploration.

Physical imbalances could include depression, difficulty learning, sensitivity to light, sound and your environment.

How do stones and crystals help to balance and heal your Chakras

Stones and crystals allow us to use two of the most fundamental healing characteristics - energy & colour - to balance our chakras. Crystals have a natural healing vibration and frequency that moves and balances the energy around them.

Another important factor is to use your intuition and power of intention to activate the crystal’s healing power. You can use your imagination or visualization to help channel and magnify the crystal’s energy to resonate with the frequency of the Chakra you’re focused on.

Which stones or crystals to use

Each Chakra is associated with a number of stones, most of which are color related. The best one for you is the one you’re most attracted to but any one of them will work. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way of using them either, it’s totally up to what feels comfortable and right for you.

How to use stones and crystal to balance your Chakras

Just as there are many different stones that you can use, there are also many ways to use them. Once you’ve chosen the stone you want to use, place it near or on its related chakra location on your body. It’s easiest to do this if you’re laying down. Leave it on for 15 minutes or so. You can also place stones on all your chakras at once, as one above your head and one below.

However, you can also use your stone or stones by simply holding them in your hands, keeping them in your pocket or purse, or wearing them as jewelry like a bracelet or pendant.

Whichever way you use your chakra stones, just remember to concentrate on activating the resonance between the stone and your chakras with the power of your intention. You can also use meditation, or simply relax and let your stone do its own thing, just by knowing you have its support in aligning your chakra’s frequency and vibration.

And always remember to cleanse your stones and crystals after you’ve used them for a while. There’s no right or wrong time to do that either; your intuition and the stone itself will let you know.
