Petalite, also known as Castorite, is a beautiful natural gemstone, but is largely unknown due to its rarity. Petalite was named after the Greek word for "leaf" because its cleavage is perfect, like the veins and junctions in a leaf. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and is a member of the feldspathoid group. Petalite occurs as colourless, grey, yellow, yellow grey, to white tabular crystals and columnar masses.
