Psyllium husk refers to the seed coat of psyllium seed, a plant native to India and Pakistan where it known as isabgol or isphagula.

The milled husks, which contain more dietary fiber than the seed, is used to make teas. Whole psyllium husks can also be added to foods, although be aware that they will absorb a good deal of cooking liquids due to a high fiber and mucilage content. The husk is extremely hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs many times its weight in water.

As a supplement, psyllium is a source of soluble fiber that improves transit time in the gut. As such, psyllium is a featured ingredient in over-the-counter laxatives and fiber supplements such as Metamucil.

Powdered psyllium husk is also used as a thickening agent in foods. The powder is also used as a binding agent in gluten-free baking mixes.

Origin: India

Storage Tips: Store in a cool, dry location in a tightly sealed container.

Appearance and aroma: Fine powder without remarkable scent

Flavour: Mild but somewhat bitter

Culinary Uses: Powdered psyllium husk is typically encapsulated as a dietary supplement. The powder may also be added directly to foods.

Before making any changes to your diet you should always consult with your doctor, especially if you are pregnant, nursing or have existing conditions.
